Getting paid from abroad is one of the biggest headaches for Ghanaian freelancers and remote workers. The best method depends on who is paying you and how much. Here are the main routes.

Option 1: withdraw from your freelancing platform

Platforms like Upwork and Fiverr list the withdrawal methods available for your country in your account settings. Upwork, for example, describes Direct to Local Bank withdrawals that usually arrive within four days. Check what your platform offers for Ghana, and compare fees.

Option 2: Payoneer

Payoneer is widely used by freelancers: clients and platforms pay into your Payoneer account, and you withdraw to a bank account. Payoneer says most bank withdrawals arrive the same day, though some take up to two business days. Check Payoneer’s fees for receiving, converting and withdrawing before you rely on it.

Option 3: a bank transfer to a domiciliary account

Many Ghanaian banks offer domiciliary (foreign currency) accounts in US dollars, pounds or euros. A client or employer can send an international bank (SWIFT) transfer to it. This suits larger payments and regular salaries. Ask your bank about the account requirements, incoming transfer charges and withdrawal rules.

Option 4: remittance services to MoMo or bank

For money from family and friends abroad, international transfer services can pay out to Ghanaian mobile money wallets or bank accounts. MTN says you can receive money from abroad into your MoMo account through its remittance partners.

Tips

  • Compare the total cost: fees plus the exchange rate.
  • Keep your names consistent across your ID, bank, MoMo and payment accounts, or transfers can be held.
  • Check MoMo limits for large amounts. See how to send money with MTN MoMo.
  • Keep records of contracts and payments for tax purposes.
Be wary of anyone who offers to “receive” your foreign payments for you, or asks you to receive money for strangers. That can be fraud or money laundering, and you could be held responsible.

A foreign-currency account (for example in US dollars) at a Ghanaian bank, which lets you receive and hold foreign currency.

Can I use PayPal in Ghana?

PayPal’s features for Ghana have been limited and confusing. Check exactly what your PayPal account can do before asking clients to pay that way.
