Sending money on MTN MoMo takes under a minute once you know the steps. Here is how to send to another MoMo user, to other networks and to a bank account, and how to make sure it reaches the right person.

Send to another MTN MoMo user (*170#)

MTN’s steps:

  1. Dial *170#.
  2. Select 1 (Transfer Money).
  3. Select 1 (Mobile Money User).
  4. Enter the mobile number, then confirm it.
  5. Enter the amount.
  6. Enter a reference (for example “rent” or “school fees”).
  7. Check the name shown, then enter your MoMo PIN.
Read the name before you enter your PIN. The confirmation shows who the number belongs to. If it is not who you expect, cancel.
MTN updates the *170# menu from time to time. If an option number on your phone differs from the one here, follow the option names instead.

Send with the MoMo app

The MoMo app lets you send money from your contacts list, which MTN says helps prevent wrong transfers because you are not typing numbers by hand. See how to use the MTN MoMo app.

Send to Telecel Cash or AT Money

MTN’s steps: dial *170#, select 1 (Transfer Money), then 5 (Other Networks), choose the receiving network, enter and confirm the number, then the amount, a reference and your PIN. Both of you get a notification when it succeeds. More in mobile money interoperability explained.

Send to a bank account

Your MoMo wallet must first be linked to your bank account, which your bank sets up. Then, according to MTN:

  1. Dial *170# and choose 5 (Financial Services).
  2. Choose 1 (Bank Services).
  3. Choose 1 (Transfer to Bank) or 2 (Transfer from Bank).
  4. Select the bank and account, enter the amount and your PIN.

How much can you send?

MTN says it depends on your balance, your wallet limit and your transaction limits, which depend on your KYC level (minimum, medium or enhanced). Check yours with *170# → 6 (My Wallet) → 8 (Check Wallet Limits). To raise them, MTN lists the documents needed: Ghana Card for minimum; plus source of funds and next of kin for medium; plus proof of address for enhanced.

What does it cost?

MoMo transfers carry service fees, but the 1% E-Levy no longer applies: MTN says it stopped from 2 April 2025. See MoMo charges in Ghana.

If you send to the wrong number

Act immediately. On MTN you can start a reversal yourself: *170# → My Wallet → Reversal. See sent MoMo to the wrong number.

This guide was checked in October 2026. Menus and services change, so if something looks different on your phone, check with your provider.
