Mobile money fees in Ghana have changed several times in the last two years: the E-Levy was scrapped, cash-out fees were revised, and a proposed MoMo-to-bank fee was paused. Here is where things stand, based on MTN’s own published fees and news reports.

What is free

  • Depositing (cash-in): MTN says depositing money into your own MoMo wallet is completely free. If anyone asks you to pay to deposit, report them.
  • Registering for MoMo: MTN says registration is free at every touch point.
  • Checking a transaction’s status: MTN’s Check Transaction Status service is free.

The E-Levy is gone

MTN says the 1% E-Levy on electronic transfers stopped applying from 2 April 2025, after Parliament cancelled the law. You do not need to do anything. MTN also says any wrong E-Levy charges from that date are refunded within 7 days. Regular MoMo service fees still apply.

MTN cash-out fees

These are MTN’s published fees for withdrawing cash at an agent:

Amount withdrawnFee
Below GH₵50GH₵0.50
GH₵50 to GH₵1,0001%
GH₵1,000 to GH₵2,0001%
GH₵2,000 and aboveGH₵20 flat

For example, withdrawing GH₵300 costs GH₵3, and withdrawing GH₵5,000 costs a flat GH₵20.

Agent asking for more? MTN says to take the agent’s number or ID and report them at a service centre or by calling 100. Agents should not charge you more than the published fee.

Sending money

MoMo-to-MoMo transfers carry a service fee. MTN does not publish a simple table of send fees on its help centre, and third-party fee lists we checked disagree with each other, so we are not printing figures here. The amount you will pay is shown on the confirmation screen before you enter your PIN: always read it.

MoMo to bank charges

On 25 May 2026, MTN told customers by SMS that MoMo-to-bank transfers would cost 0.75% per transaction, capped at GH₵5, from 1 June 2026. The next day, the Bank of Ghana directed MTN’s mobile money company to pause the fee for wider consultation, according to news reports. Check MTN’s current terms before relying on either.

How to pay less

  • Pay merchants directly instead of cashing out to pay in cash.
  • Cash out larger amounts less often if you can; above GH₵2,000 the fee is flat.
  • Check the fee on the confirmation screen before entering your PIN.
  • Report agents who overcharge.

Telecel Cash and AT Money publish their own fees; Telecel’s terms say its fees are published on the Telecel Cash website and at its outlets.
