If you have been scammed, the first hour matters most. Reporting quickly gives your provider a chance to hold the money in the fraudster’s wallet before it is cashed out. Here is who to tell, how, and what to have ready.
Before you call: gather the details
- The transaction ID (from your SMS or statement).
- The amount, date and time.
- The number the money went to, and any number that called or texted you.
- Screenshots of messages, chats or fake alerts.
Report to MTN MoMo
MTN gives two official ways to report fraud:
By USSD
- Dial *170#.
- Select 6 (My Wallet).
- Choose 4 (Report Fraud).
- Select the type: Wrong transfer, New reversal process, Fake SMS, Fake blocking or Fake promotions.
- Follow the prompts to enter the details.
By email
Send the details to mmfraudteam.GH@mtn.com. You can also call MTN on 100 or 0244300000, or visit an MTN service centre.
Report to Telecel Cash or AT Money
- Telecel Cash: contact Telecel’s customer call centre or visit a Telecel retail shop. Telecel’s terms say reversals for transactions sent to the wrong recipient are started through those channels.
- AT Money: call 100 or visit an AT shop.
Report to the authorities
- The police: report at your nearest station and keep the reference number.
- The Cyber Security Authority (CSA): takes reports on its 292 line. Full details in how to report cybercrime in Ghana.
After you report
- Change your PIN if there is any chance it was exposed.
- Do not pay anyone who offers to recover your money. “Recovery agents” are often the same scammers coming back for more.
- Follow up with your ticket or reference number.
- Warn family and friends, especially older relatives, about the script that was used on you.
Sent money to the wrong number by mistake?
That is not fraud, but it is just as urgent. MTN lets you start a reversal yourself in *170# (My Wallet, then Reversal). See sent MoMo to the wrong number.
