Your MoMo balance is the one number that tells you the truth about your wallet. Checking it properly also protects you from one of the most common scams in Ghana: fake “you have received money” text messages.
Method 1: *170# (any phone)
- Dial *170#.
- Choose My Wallet (option 6 on MTN’s current menu).
- Choose the Check Balance option.
- Enter your MoMo PIN. Your balance is shown on screen.
Method 2: the MoMo app
MTN’s MoMo app shows your balance once you log in. You can enable fingerprint login after entering your PIN once, which saves you typing your PIN in public. MTN says the app also lets you buy airtime and data, send money and get statements. More in how to use the MTN MoMo app.
Why the menu beats the text message
A text message saying “You have received GH₵500” proves nothing. Anyone can send an SMS that looks like a MoMo alert. Your balance in *170# or the app comes from MTN’s system and cannot be faked.
So before you hand over goods, or send anything “back” to someone who claims they paid you by mistake, check your real balance. See how to spot a fake MoMo payment alert.
Check a specific transaction
MTN has a free Check Transaction Status service for the last 90 days, which works whether you sent or received the money:
- Dial *170# and choose 6 (My Wallet).
- Choose 5 (Statements), then 3 (Check Transaction Status).
- Enter your PIN, choose whether you were the sender or receiver, and enter the other number and the date.
Get a full statement
- By USSD: *170# → My Wallet → Statements → Statement Request. Enter your PIN, your email address and the dates. MTN emails the statement.
- In the app: MTN says the MoMo app can email statements for 30, 60 or 90 days, or a custom range in the last 90 days, as a PDF.
- Online: register at statements.mtn.com.gh with your MTN number. Each request covers up to 90 days.

Common questions
What is the MTN MoMo balance code?
Dial *170#, choose My Wallet, then the balance option, and enter your PIN. The MoMo app also shows your balance after you log in.
Can someone check my MoMo balance without my PIN?
No. Checking your balance needs your PIN, which is another reason never to share it.
Why is my balance different from what the SMS said?
Trust the balance in the *170# menu or the app. Text messages can be faked; your real balance cannot.
How do I see my past MoMo transactions?
Request a statement through *170# (My Wallet, then Statements), the MoMo app, or MTN’s statements website.
