In Ghana’s heat, phones work hard. A bit of warmth during charging or a long video call is normal. But if your phone is hot to the touch, slowing down or showing a temperature warning, it is protecting itself, and you should act.

What your phone does when it gets too hot

Google says a hot phone may reduce performance, slow down charging, or switch off Wi-Fi and mobile data to protect itself. Apple says an overheating iPhone may slow or stop charging and dim the screen. These are safety features: they are telling you to cool it down.

Common causes

  • Direct sun or a hot car. Apple designs iPhones to work best between 0°C and 35°C ambient temperature. A dashboard in the Accra afternoon is far hotter.
  • Charging while using heavily: gaming, video calls or streaming while plugged in.
  • Heavy tasks: Google lists video calls, recording video, streaming, gaming and navigation as common causes.
  • A thick case that traps heat, especially while charging.
  • Weak signal: the phone works harder to stay connected.
  • A misbehaving app running in the background.
  • Fast charging or a poor-quality charger.
  • An ageing or damaged battery.

How to cool it down safely

  1. Stop what you are doing and close heavy apps.
  2. Unplug it if it is charging.
  3. Take it out of its case.
  4. Move it somewhere shaded and cooler, away from the sun.
  5. If it is very hot or showing a warning, turn it off and let it cool.
Do not put a hot phone in the fridge or freezer, or in front of an air conditioner vent. Sudden temperature changes can cause condensation inside.

Stop it happening again

  • Keep the phone out of direct sun, and never leave it on a car dashboard.
  • Avoid gaming or video calls while charging.
  • Use a good-quality charger and cable.
  • Check battery usage for apps working in the background (Settings → Battery).
  • Keep the phone’s software and apps updated.

When to get help

If your phone gets hot while idle, the battery drains very fast, or the back or screen starts lifting (a swollen battery), stop charging it and take it to a reputable repairer. A swollen battery is a fire risk.

Common questions

Is it normal for my phone to get warm while charging?

A little warmth is normal, especially with fast charging. A phone that is too hot to hold comfortably is not.

Can I put my phone in the fridge to cool it?

No. Sudden cold can cause condensation inside the phone. Let it cool naturally in a shaded, ventilated place.

Can overheating damage my phone?

Repeated high heat ages the battery faster, and phones limit performance and charging to protect themselves.

Why does my phone get hot when I am not using it?

An app may be running in the background, or the battery may be failing. Check battery usage, and see a repairer if the phone is hot and the battery is swelling.
