An iPhone that feels hot is common in Ghana’s climate. Usually it is heat from the environment, charging or heavy use, and it fixes itself once the phone cools. Here is Apple’s guidance and the steps that help.

What Apple says is a safe temperature

  • Using your iPhone: designed for ambient temperatures between 0°C and 35°C.
  • Storing it: between −20°C and 45°C.

A closed car in the sun can go far above 45°C. Never leave your iPhone there.

What happens when it gets too hot

Apple says an overheating iPhone may slow down or stop charging (including wireless charging), dim or darken the screen, weaken the cellular signal, and pause the camera flash. If it gets very hot, you may see a temperature warning, and the phone limits itself until it cools.

If you see a temperature warning

  1. Turn the iPhone off.
  2. Move it somewhere cooler, out of direct sun.
  3. Let it cool down before turning it back on.

Do not put it in the fridge or freezer.

Warm after an update? That is normal

Apple says it is normal for an iPhone to feel warm during a software update, especially a major one, and shortly after, while it re-indexes photos and finishes background work. It should settle within a day or two.

Everyday fixes

  • Remove the case while charging or gaming.
  • Charge with a good-quality Apple or certified charger, and avoid heavy use while charging.
  • Lower brightness and close apps you are not using.
  • Check battery usage: Settings → Battery shows which apps use the most power. Update or delete any that misbehave.
  • Update iOS once the phone is cool, as updates can fix bugs. See how to update iOS.
  • Check Battery Health: Settings → Battery → Battery Health. A worn battery can run hotter; replacing it at an authorised service provider or reputable shop can help.
If your iPhone is hot while doing nothing, or the screen or back is lifting, stop charging it and get it checked. A swollen battery is a fire risk.
