Unlike Telecel and AT, MTN does not publish a simple list of bundles with prices. Its official tariffs page lists a rate per MB for each spending band instead. That rate changes a lot between amounts, and so does the value you get.

We took MTN’s published rates and worked out roughly how much data each common amount buys. As a check, our figures match the volumes MTN lists for its Xtrabyte bundles (for example, GH₵1 for 41MB, GH₵3 for 406MB and GH₵20 for 1,422MB).

MTN data prices at a glance

These are MTN’s regular mobile data bundles. MTN’s help centre describes its top GH₵399 bundle as non-expiry data; check the validity shown in the menu when you buy smaller amounts. Volumes are approximate (1GB = 1,024MB) and rounded.

Before you buy, check the volume listed in the *138# menu or the MyMTN app, and check the confirmation SMS afterwards. MTN can change its rates, and this table is only as current as the date at the bottom of this page.

What the table tells you

1. Small amounts are expensive, except GH₵3

At GH₵1 or GH₵2 you pay over GH₵20 per GB. GH₵3 is the odd one out: MTN gives it a much cheaper rate, so it buys almost four times as much as GH₵2, and nearly as much as GH₵5. If you buy small amounts, GH₵3 is the sweet spot.

2. GH₵10 beats GH₵20 and GH₵50 per GB

Between GH₵5 and GH₵99, MTN charges the same rate, except for GH₵10, which gets a slightly better one. That means two GH₵10 bundles (about 1.64GB) give you more than one GH₵20 bundle (about 1.39GB). Check the volumes on your own phone before relying on this, but it is worth knowing.

3. Big bundles are far cheaper per GB

The rate drops sharply from GH₵200 upwards. The top bundle, GH₵399, works out under GH₵2 per GB, about seven times cheaper per GB than GH₵50. Because MTN’s GH₵399 bundle is non-expiry data, a big bundle can make sense if you use a lot of data over a few months, or if you share costs with family on one line.

The expensive mistake: browsing without a bundle. MTN’s out-of-bundle rate is GH₵0.1145 per MB, which is about GH₵117 per GB. If your bundle runs out and your phone keeps browsing on airtime, it disappears fast. Turn off mobile data when your bundle runs out, or top up with a bundle straight away.

MTN’s GH₵399 bundle vs Telecel and AT

MTN’s biggest bundle is the best value on its own menu, but the other two networks give more for about the same money at the top end:

NetworkTop bundleYou get (about)Cost per GB
MTNGH₵399217GBGH₵1.84
TelecelGH₵400 (no expiry)253.25GBGH₵1.58
ATGH₵400 (BigTime)253.3GBGH₵1.58

That is roughly 36GB more for one extra cedi. Coverage still matters more than price: a bigger bundle is no use where the network is weak. Full comparison: the cheapest data bundles in Ghana.

Time-limited bundles that cost less

Midnight bundle (12am to 5am)

MTN’s Midnight Bundle works only between midnight and 5am, but it is very cheap. From the rates on MTN’s tariffs page, GH₵1 buys about 2GB and GH₵3 about 8.5GB. MTN says the midnight bundle does not expire and has no cap on apps. It is ideal for big downloads and phone updates: start them before bed.

Kokrokoo (5am to 8am)

MTN lists Kokrokoo at GH₵1.22 for 460MB, usable only from 5am to 8am. Buy it through *138#, option 3.

Data Zone

Data Zone bundles are one-day bundles offered to customers who already have an active non-Data-Zone bundle. MTN’s tariffs page lists GH₵2.99 for about 327MB, GH₵3.99 for about 495MB and GH₵5.99 for about 806MB, and MTN sometimes offers them at a discount. They expire after a day, so use them, don’t save them.

How MTN’s prices have changed recently

  • July 2025: after a government directive, MTN added 15% more data to its bundles at the same prices, and brought back the GH₵399 bundle (214GB at the time), replacing a GH₵350 option that gave about 93GB.
  • January 2026: after Ghana’s VAT reforms, MTN reviewed all its tariffs from 2 January 2026. Bundle volumes went up slightly and pay-as-you-go rates came down a little.

Prices can change again, which is why we date-stamp this guide. If something does not match, the *138# menu and the MyMTN app are the final word.

Getting more for your money

  • Buy the right size. Check how much data you used last month (Settings → Data usage on Android, Settings → Mobile Data on iPhone) and buy closer to that.
  • Use the MyMTN app with MoMo. MTN’s help centre says data bought in the app with MoMo comes with a 4G bonus.
  • Schedule big downloads for midnight. Updates and downloads on the Midnight Bundle cost a fraction of daytime data.
  • Make it last. Our guide to making your mobile data last longer covers the settings that save the most data.

Common questions

What is the cheapest MTN data bundle per GB?

Among regular bundles, the biggest one, GH₵399, is cheapest per GB at under GH₵2. For small amounts, GH₵3 gives far more data per cedi than GH₵1, GH₵2 or GH₵5.

Do MTN data bundles expire?

MTN’s help centre describes its GH₵399 bundle and the Midnight Bundle as non-expiry. Bundles such as Data Zone and Kokrokoo are limited to one day or certain hours, so check the validity in the menu before you buy.

Why does MTN not show a simple price list?

MTN publishes its data tariffs as a rate per MB for each spending band. The *138# menu and the MyMTN app show what each amount buys when you purchase.

How much does MTN charge when I browse without a bundle?

MTN lists its out-of-bundle data rate at GH₵0.1145 per MB, about GH₵117 per GB. Always buy a bundle rather than browsing on airtime.
