Home internet in Ghana comes in four main forms. The best one for you depends on what is available on your street, how many people use it, and how much you stream or work from home.

The four main options

TypeHow it worksBest forWatch out for
Fibre broadbandA cable to your homeFamilies, home offices, streamingOnly in covered areas; installation time
4G/5G home routerA router with a SIM, plugged in at homeAreas without fibreSpeed depends on mobile signal
MiFi (pocket Wi-Fi)A small battery-powered router with a SIMOne or two people, travellingData caps; battery life
Satellite (Starlink)A dish on your roofAreas with poor fibre and mobile coverageHigher upfront kit cost; needs clear sky view

Who offers what

  • MTN: MTN Fibre for homes and businesses, TurboNet home routers, and MiFi devices. Check fibre plans and coverage on MTN’s channels.
  • Telecel: fixed broadband products for homes and businesses, plus mobile data routers.
  • AT: MiFi and router data, with balance checks through its *100# self-service menu.
  • Starlink: approved by the National Communications Authority in 2024; buy only through Starlink’s official channels.
  • Other licensed ISPs serve particular areas and businesses. The NCA regulates internet providers in Ghana.

Questions to ask before you sign up

  1. Is it available at my exact address? Ask for a coverage check.
  2. Is the data unlimited, or capped? What happens when I reach the cap?
  3. What speed is promised, and is it “up to”?
  4. What are the installation and equipment costs, and is there a contract period?
  5. How do I report faults, and how fast are they fixed?
  6. Does the router work during power cuts? (Consider a small UPS for the router.)

Test before you commit

Ask neighbours which provider works well on your street, and run speed tests at different times. MTN’s help centre, for example, explains how to test your MTN Fibre speed.

Keep your router’s password private and change the default one. See the best routers for home internet.

Common questions

What is the fastest home internet in Ghana?

Fibre is usually the fastest and most stable where it is available. Availability depends on your street.

Yes. The National Communications Authority approved Starlink in Ghana in 2024. Buy through official channels.

Is MiFi good for home internet?

MiFi suits light use, one or two people, or moving around. Heavy streaming households usually do better with fibre or a home router.

Where do I complain about poor internet service?

Start with your provider. If it is not resolved, you can complain to the National Communications Authority through its complaints portal.
