Ask ten people which network has the best internet in Ghana and you will get ten answers, usually based on where they live. That is because the honest answer is: it depends on your area. Here is what the independent data says, what it costs, and how to test it yourself.

What the independent speed data says

Ookla, the company behind Speedtest, gives annual awards based on millions of real speed tests run by users. At its 2026 awards, presented at MWC 2026 in Barcelona, MTN Ghana was named Fastest Mobile Network in Ghana, with a Speedtest Connectivity Score of 67.16, and also won Best Fixed Network in Ghana.

That is a national picture. It tells you which network is fastest on average across the country, not which one is fastest on your street. We did not find comparable published figures for Telecel and AT from Ookla for the same period.

What it costs

Speed is only half the story. On price, Telecel and AT give more data per cedi than MTN at most bundle sizes. For example, GH₵50 gets you about 4.5GB on Telecel or AT and about 3.5GB on MTN. Full figures in the cheapest data bundles in Ghana: MTN vs Telecel vs AT.

How to test networks yourself

  1. Get a second SIM. SIMs are cheap, and most phones take two. Register it with your Ghana Card.
  2. Buy a small bundle on the network you want to test.
  3. Run speed tests where you spend your time: at home, at work or school, and on your commute. Test at a busy time (evening) and a quiet time (morning).
  4. Use it for a week. Watch for dropped connections and how WhatsApp, YouTube and calls feel, not just the speed number.
  5. Ask your neighbours which network works best in your building or area.
Coverage beats speed. A network that is fastest on average is no use if your room has one bar. Always test where you live.

Should you switch?

If you rely on your number for MoMo, banking and WhatsApp, you do not have to give it up. Many people keep their main number and add a second SIM just for data on whichever network works best in their area.

Quality rules are getting stricter

In February 2026 the National Communications Authority (NCA) amended its quality-of-service standards for mobile networks, replacing rules that had been in place since 2004, and said it would step up monitoring. If your network’s service is persistently poor and it does not fix it, you can complain to the NCA through its complaints portal.
