Your router decides how well your internet reaches every room, how many devices it handles, and whether it survives a power cut. Whether you need a SIM router, a MiFi or a Wi-Fi router for fibre, here is what to look for.
We do not list cedi prices in this guide: laptop prices in Ghana change with the exchange rate and between sellers every few weeks. Use the specs here to judge any offer.
Pick the right type
| Type | Use it when |
|---|---|
| MiFi (pocket router) | You move around, or only one or two people use it; has a battery |
| 4G/5G home router (SIM) | You have no fibre; better antennas than a MiFi |
| Wi-Fi router or mesh for fibre | You have fibre and need better coverage in a bigger home |
Specs that matter
- Network compatibility (SIM routers): must support the 4G (or 5G) bands your network uses and be unlocked. MTN says its 4G network uses the 800MHz band (band 20).
- Wi-Fi standard: Wi-Fi 5 is fine; Wi-Fi 6 handles many devices better.
- Dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz): 2.4GHz reaches further; 5GHz is faster at short range.
- Number of devices supported, especially for MiFis.
- Battery life for MiFis.
- External antenna ports help in weak-signal areas.
- An Ethernet port for a desktop computer or TV.
Set it up securely
- Change the Wi-Fi password from the default to a long, unique one.
- Change the router’s admin password too.
- Use WPA2 or WPA3 security.
- Check the connected devices list now and then. MTN’s help centre explains how to see devices connected to an MTN MiFi and how to change its password.
Keep it online through dumsor
- A small UPS keeps a home router and fibre box running for hours during outages.
- Some routers can run from a power bank with the right cable; check the router’s power requirements.
- A MiFi with a good battery is the simplest backup.
Place it well
Put the router high, central and away from thick walls and metal. For SIM routers, near a window facing the nearest mast gives the best signal.

Common questions
Do I need a router if I have fibre?
Your fibre provider usually supplies one. You can add a better Wi-Fi router or mesh system if coverage in your home is weak.
Will any SIM router work in Ghana?
Check that it supports the 4G bands your network uses and is not locked to another network. MTN says its 4G uses the 800MHz band (band 20).
How do I stop neighbours using my Wi-Fi?
Change the default Wi-Fi password to a strong one and check the list of connected devices.
Will my router work during power cuts?
Only if it has a battery (like a MiFi) or is connected to a UPS or power bank that supports it.
