Wi-Fi problems are frustrating, especially when you are trying to save your mobile data. First work out whether the problem is your phone or the Wi-Fi itself, then fix the right thing.
First: is it the phone or the Wi-Fi?
Try another phone or laptop on the same Wi-Fi. If nothing connects, the problem is the router or the internet service. If only your phone fails, it is your phone.
If it is the Wi-Fi (router)
- Restart the router: unplug it, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in, and wait a few minutes.
- Check the data balance if it is a MiFi or router with a bundle (MTN: *124#).
- Check for an outage with your internet provider.
- Too many devices? Some MiFis limit the number of connected devices.
If it is your phone
1. Toggle Wi-Fi and airplane mode
Turn Wi-Fi off and on. Then turn airplane mode on for 10 seconds and off again.
2. Restart the phone
A restart fixes many connection glitches.
3. Forget the network and reconnect
Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi → tap the network → Forget. Then select it again and type the password carefully (it is case-sensitive).
4. Move closer
Walls and distance weaken Wi-Fi. If it works next to the router but not in your room, the signal is too weak. A better-placed router or a Wi-Fi extender can help.
5. Check settings that interfere
- Turn off any VPN and test again.
- Make sure the date and time are set to automatic.
- Check battery saver settings that turn off Wi-Fi when the screen is off.
- Check Private DNS (Settings → Network & internet): set it to Automatic if you changed it.
6. Update the phone
Install system updates: Settings → System → Software update.
7. Reset network settings
Settings → System → Reset options → Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth. This removes saved Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth pairings, so use it as a last resort.
Wi-Fi works, but WhatsApp or one app does not?
Some offices, campuses and hotels block certain apps on their Wi-Fi. Try mobile data, and see WhatsApp not working.

Common questions
Why does Wi-Fi say “Connected, no internet”?
The phone is connected to the router, but the router is not getting internet. Check whether other devices work, and restart the router.
Why does my phone keep disconnecting from Wi-Fi?
Weak signal, battery-saving settings, or a router issue. Move closer to the router and check whether other devices drop too.
What does “Forget network” do?
It deletes the saved Wi-Fi details from your phone. You then reconnect by entering the password again, which often fixes connection problems.
Will resetting network settings delete my data?
No, but it removes saved Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth pairings and mobile network settings.
