Used well, AI is like a patient tutor available at 2am before an exam. Used badly, it writes assignments you do not understand and leaves you stuck in the exam hall. Here is how to use it well.

Free tools worth trying

  • ChatGPT and Gemini: explanations, summaries, quizzes. Both are available in Ghana.
  • Google NotebookLM: upload your lecture notes and PDFs, then ask questions about them or get a study guide.
  • Microsoft Copilot: similar, and handy if your school uses Microsoft 365.
  • Canva: presentations and posters for group work.
  • Free office tools: see free alternatives to Microsoft Office.

Smart ways to study with AI

  • “Explain like I am new to this”: ask for simple explanations with Ghanaian examples.
  • Quiz yourself: “Ask me 10 questions on photosynthesis, one at a time, and mark my answers.”
  • Past questions: paste a WASSCE or exam-style question and ask for the method, not just the answer.
  • Summaries: paste your own notes and ask for a one-page revision sheet.
  • Essay feedback: paste your own draft and ask what is unclear or weak.

Always follow your school’s or university’s rules. When unsure, ask your teacher or lecturer.

AI tools make confident mistakes. Always check facts, figures, names, laws and prices against a reliable source before you publish, submit or act on anything an AI writes.

Protect yourself

  • AI can invent sources. Check every reference in the library or online.
  • Do not share your student ID, passwords or personal details.
  • Avoid “cheap premium AI” sellers on WhatsApp. They are often scams.

Common questions

Is using ChatGPT for assignments cheating?

It depends on your school’s rules and how you use it. Using AI to understand or revise is usually fine; submitting AI-written work as your own usually is not.

Can lecturers detect AI writing?

Detection tools exist but are unreliable. The real risk is that you do not learn the material, and that your work does not sound like you.

Which tool helps with maths?

General assistants can explain steps, but check every calculation. They make arithmetic mistakes.

Are these tools really free?

They have free plans with limits. You do not need a paid plan for normal studying.
