Seeing “This account is not allowed to use WhatsApp” is alarming, especially if you use it for business. The good news: if you think it is a mistake, WhatsApp lets you ask for a review from inside the app.

Why accounts get banned

WhatsApp bans accounts it believes broke its Terms of Service, such as:

  • Sending spam or bulk messages to people who do not have your number saved.
  • Scams, fraud or activity that puts other users at risk.
  • Using unofficial versions of WhatsApp, like “GB WhatsApp” or other modified apps, which WhatsApp warns against.

A recycled number can also carry a ban from its previous owner.

How to request a review

  1. Open WhatsApp on the banned number. You will see a message that the number cannot use WhatsApp.
  2. Tap Request a review (or similar).
  3. Follow the steps and submit. You can explain your situation if asked.
  4. Wait for the decision. WhatsApp says most reviews are completed within 24 hours, and it notifies you in the app.

WhatsApp reviews one phone number per appeal. If there is no option to request a review, WhatsApp says the ban is final and cannot be appealed.

What does not help

  • Contacting WhatsApp outside the review, or from another person’s account. WhatsApp says this will not speed things up or change the decision.
  • Paying an “unban” service. WhatsApp says only it can ban or unban accounts. Anyone charging to unban you is running a scam.

Banned temporarily or restricted?

Some accounts are restricted for a period rather than banned outright. Follow what the app tells you, wait out the restriction, and avoid the behaviour that caused it.

Your chats during a ban

WhatsApp says your chat history and backups are not available while the account is banned, and become accessible only after the number is unbanned.

Avoid a ban

  • Use only the official WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app.
  • Do not message people in bulk who have not saved your number. For business messaging, use WhatsApp Business properly.
  • Do not add people to groups without their permission.

What if there is no “Request review” option?

WhatsApp says that means the ban is final and cannot be appealed.
