Your WhatsApp account is tied to your phone number, not your phone. As long as you have the SIM for that number, you can almost always get the account back. Your chats are a separate question: they come back only if you have a backup.

What you need

  • The SIM card for your number, in the phone. WhatsApp says an account cannot be recovered without it. Lost your SIM? Get a replacement from your network (bring your Ghana Card).
  • Your two-step verification PIN, if you set one.
  • A backup on Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iPhone), if you want your chats back.

Step 1: Install WhatsApp and verify your number

  1. Install WhatsApp from Google Play or the App Store.
  2. Open it, agree to the terms and enter your phone number.
  3. Enter the six-digit code sent by SMS or call.
  4. Enter your two-step verification PIN if asked.

Step 2: Restore your chats

If WhatsApp finds a backup linked to your Google account or Apple ID, it offers to restore it during setup. Tap Restore and wait. Use the same Google account or Apple ID that made the backup. Missed it? Uninstall, reinstall and verify again to get the option back.

Locked out by two-step verification

  • Added an email? Tap “Forgot PIN” and request a reset link to that email.
  • No email? You may have to wait several days before WhatsApp lets you reset access.
  • Using a recycled number? The previous owner may have set a PIN. WhatsApp says you will need to wait a few days before resetting access.

If someone else is using your account

That is a hacked account, and re-registering is the fix. See WhatsApp account hacked: what to do.

If WhatsApp says your number is banned

That needs a review request, not recovery. See how to appeal a WhatsApp ban.

Prevent it next time

  • Turn on chat backups to Google Drive or iCloud.
  • Turn on two-step verification and add an email.
  • Keep your SIM registered and active.

Common questions

Can I recover WhatsApp without my SIM card?

Only if you had a backup on Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iPhone) and restore it during setup.

I forgot my two-step verification PIN. What can I do?

If you added an email, request a reset link. Without one, you may have to wait several days before you can reset access.

Can I recover WhatsApp on a new phone?

Yes. Install WhatsApp, verify your number with the SIM in the new phone, and restore your backup.
