Your profile picture changed, friends are getting strange messages from you, or you simply cannot log in. Act quickly: the longer a hacker has your account, the more damage they can do, from scamming your friends to locking you out for good.
Step 1: Go to facebook.com/hacked
This is Meta’s official recovery page. Open it from a phone or computer you have used to log in to Facebook before; Meta says this works best from a familiar device. Follow the prompts to secure your account. Meta says you may be able to recover your account there even if you are not sure it was hacked.
Step 2: Undo an email change
If the hacker changed your email address, Facebook sends a message to your previous email address with a special link to reverse the change. Search your old inbox (including spam) for an email from Facebook about the change, and use the link.
Step 3: If you cannot use your old email or number
- From a familiar device, go to facebook.com/login/identify.
- Search for your account using any email, phone number or name linked to it.
- Follow the prompts to confirm it is yours. Meta may ask for new contact details, which must not be linked to another Facebook account.
Step 4: Once you are back in, lock it down
- Change your password to something long and unique.
- Turn on two-factor authentication in Settings → Accounts Centre → Password and security.
- Check “Where you’re logged in” and log out of devices you do not recognise.
- Remove unknown email addresses and phone numbers from your account.
- Check posts, messages and Pages for anything the hacker did, and warn your friends not to send money to “you”.
Signs your account was hacked
- Your name, profile picture or password changed.
- Posts, comments or messages you did not write.
- Login or two-factor problems you did not cause.
- Unknown devices in “Where you’re logged in”.
If you manage a Page
Hacked Pages have a separate recovery form in Meta’s help centre, available while you are logged in. Meta replies by email.
For your other accounts, see what to do when your account is hacked.
This guide was checked in October 2026. Menus and services change, so if something looks different on your phone, check with your provider.
Common questions
What is the official link to recover a hacked Facebook account?
Go to facebook.com/hacked, ideally from a phone or computer you have logged in with before.
The hacker changed my email. Can I undo it?
Yes, often. Facebook sends a message to your old email address with a link to reverse the change. Search that inbox for it.
I no longer have my old phone number or email. What now?
Use facebook.com/login/identify from a familiar device and follow the prompts. Meta may ask for new contact details that are not linked to any other Facebook account.
Should I pay someone who says they can recover my account?
No. “Recovery hackers” on social media are almost always scammers. Use only Facebook’s official tools.
