In May 2026, Ghana’s tech industry pushed back hard against the National Information Technology Agency (NITA) over registration fees and compliance demands. The government says NITA is simply enforcing laws already on the books. Here is what we know.

What NITA is enforcing

According to NITA and the Communications Minister, NITA’s current enforcement rests on:

  • The National Information Technology Agency Act, 2008 (Act 771).
  • The Electronic Transactions Act, 2008 (Act 772).
  • The Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Regulations, 2023 (L.I. 2481), amended in 2025 by L.I. 2512.

NITA says these regulations cover registration of ICT companies, ICT professionals, fintech entities and e-commerce providers, with annual renewals.

How much?

News reports in May 2026 said NITA was enforcing accreditation fees of GH₵20,000 for fintech firms and GH₵10,000 for e-commerce providers. We did not find an official published fee schedule for ICT companies or individual professionals. If you run a tech business, ask NITA for the schedule that applies to you.

Why the industry is angry

  • Startups and small businesses fear the extra cost will hurt innovation and the ease of doing business.
  • Critics say NITA is enforcing ideas from a proposed NITA Bill that Parliament has not passed, including licensing of ICT activities and mandatory certification of ICT professionals.

The government’s response

Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George said NITA is enforcing existing law, adding that “the proposed new legislation has NOT even been laid before Parliament”. NITA said its current framework predates the NITA Bill, which is still in stakeholder consultation, and rejected claims it had “manufactured tomorrow’s powers today”.

What it means for you

  • Fintech or e-commerce business? Check your registration status and fees with NITA directly.
  • Freelancer or developer? Watch the NITA Bill consultation; certification for ICT professionals is part of the proposal, not current law as reported.
  • Ordinary users are not asked to register.
