Canva has made design accessible to everyone, which means two things: lots of people can do it, and lots of businesses need it. To earn well, you need to be better, faster or more specialised than the next person.
Ways to earn
1. Design for local clients
- Small businesses: flyers, price lists, menus, social media posts.
- Churches and events: programmes, funeral brochures, wedding invitations, birthday flyers.
- Schools: posters, certificates, newsletters.
Offer monthly packages (for example, 12 social posts a month) for steady income.
2. Freelance online
List design gigs on platforms like Fiverr and Upwork. See freelancing websites available in Ghana.
3. Sell templates
Create editable templates (social media kits, CV templates, planners) and sell them online. Read Canva’s licence terms first.
4. Canva Creators
Canva Creators lets designers publish templates and elements inside Canva and earn royalties. Canva says template payouts come from a royalty pool based on usage, and element payouts depend on Pro usage. You apply with a portfolio, and all submissions are reviewed.
How to stand out
- Do not just change the text on templates. Learn layout, typography and colour.
- Specialise: funeral brochures, restaurant menus or church media.
- Build a portfolio of 10 to 15 strong pieces, even if the first ones are for friends.
- Be reliable: deliver on time, with correct spelling, dates and phone numbers.
Pricing
Check what other designers in your area charge, then price for your quality and turnaround time. Always agree the price, number of revisions and deadline before you start, and take a deposit from new clients.
Use AI to work faster
Canva’s AI features, plus tools like ChatGPT for headlines, help you deliver faster. See AI tools for graphic design.
