Many people search for “how to get a TIN number in Ghana” when an employer, bank or school asks for one. If you are an individual, the good news is: you already have one.
Individuals: your Ghana Card PIN is your TIN
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) says that from 1 April 2021, the Ghana Card Personal Identification Number (PIN) is used as the Taxpayer Identification Number for individual taxpayers. Your Ghana Card PIN is printed on your card and starts with GHA-.
So when a form asks for your TIN, enter your Ghana Card PIN.
No Ghana Card yet?
Register for a Ghana Card at a National Identification Authority (NIA) registration centre. GRA says NIA has also had desks at some GRA offices.
Had an old TIN?
GRA set up a self-service portal on its website for existing taxpayers to link their Ghana Card PIN to their old TIN. GRA has said that without a Ghana Card PIN, you cannot access taxpayer information or carry out tax transactions.
Companies and other organisations
GRA says companies still use GRA-generated TINs, not a Ghana Card PIN. Business registration and tax registration go through the Office of the Registrar of Companies and GRA. See registering your startup in Ghana.
