Applying for a Ghana passport starts online. You still need to go in person for your biometrics (photo and fingerprints), but the forms and payment are done on the internet.

Before you start

  • Your Ghana Card.
  • Your birth certificate and any other documents the form asks for.
  • A working email address and phone number for OTPs.
  • Two guarantors: adults who have known you for at least two years, with their details.

The steps

  1. Go to passport.mfa.gov.gh and follow “How to apply”, which takes you to the ghana.gov platform.
  2. Find the Passport Office service and click Apply.
  3. Sign up with your email and phone number, and enter the OTP.
  4. Authorise the platform to share your details with the Passport Application portal.
  5. Fill in the application form and your guarantors’ details.
  6. Pay the fee online.
  7. Book and attend your biometrics appointment at the Passport Application Centre with your documents.

These steps follow the Passport Office’s official “How to apply” page.

Fees and processing time

Fees depend on the number of pages and whether you choose standard or expedited service. Check the current fees on the portal when you apply.

Guarantors

Your two guarantors confirm your identity, and they take on legal responsibilities. Choose people who genuinely know you.

Diaspora and dual citizens

A 2026 Citi Newsroom explainer covers how Ghanaians abroad and dual citizens can get a Ghanaian passport, including the rules for people who did not hold Ghanaian citizenship as of 31 December 1996.

Apply only through passport.mfa.gov.gh and ghana.gov. Ignore “agents” who promise to speed up your passport for extra money.
