If a watermark says “Activate Windows” in the corner of your screen, Windows does not recognise a valid licence. Here is how to fix it properly.

Step 1: check your status

Go to Settings → System → Activation. It shows whether Windows is activated and whether you have a digital licence or product key.

Step 2: activate

If your laptop came with Windows

Most new laptops have a digital licence linked to the hardware and activate automatically when online. If not, connect to the internet and use the Troubleshoot option on the Activation page.

If you have a product key

On the Activation page, choose Change product key and enter the 25-character key from your purchase.

If you changed hardware

Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to your licence and use the activation troubleshooter to reactivate.

Buying a licence

Buy Windows from the Microsoft Store, Microsoft’s website or an authorised retailer. Be very wary of extremely cheap keys from unknown websites: they may be stolen or stop working.

Avoid KMS activators and cracks. Besides being illegal, they are a common way to install malware, ransomware and password stealers on Ghanaian PCs.

Still on Windows 10?

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on 14 October 2025. If your PC is eligible, upgrade to Windows 11 for continued security updates. See free antivirus for Windows.
