With 5G on the way, more phones in Ghanaian shops carry a “5G” label. Here is how to choose one that will actually work when Ghana’s networks launch.
Where 5G stands
As of early October 2026, no network had launched consumer 5G. Telecel aims to launch by December 2026; MTN has secured 700MHz and 3GHz spectrum but has not given a date. See is 5G available in Ghana?.
What to check
- 5G bands: look in the phone’s official spec sheet for its 5G bands. Spectrum awarded in Ghana includes 700MHz and 3GHz (MTN) and 2.3GHz (Telecel). Ask your network which bands it will use.
- Region version: the same model can have different bands in different countries. Buy the version sold officially in Ghana or Africa where possible.
- Software updates: 5G support sometimes arrives through updates; brands with good update records are safer.
- Battery: 5G can use more power. Look for 5,000mAh or more.

Should you wait?
If you need a phone now, buying 5G-ready makes sense for the future. If you only want 5G for its own sake, there is no rush: early coverage will be limited to city centres.
