# How to use one WhatsApp account on two phones

WhatsApp used to work on only one phone at a time. Now you can link your account to a second phone, plus computers and tablets, without moving your number.

## How linking works

- Your main phone stays the **primary device**.
- You can link **up to four devices**.
- Linked devices work even when the main phone is off.
- WhatsApp logs linked devices out if you do not use WhatsApp on your main phone for **over 14 days**.

## Link a second phone

1. On the **second phone**, install WhatsApp and open it.
2. Instead of registering a number, choose the option to **link as a companion device** (shown in the menu on the welcome screen). A QR code appears.
3. On your **main phone**, open WhatsApp → Linked devices (Android: three dots; iPhone: Settings).
4. Tap **Link a device** and scan the QR code.

WhatsApp also supports linking with your phone number and a one-time code instead of a QR code: choose “link with phone number instead” and enter the code from the second phone on your main phone.

WhatsApp updates its menus often. If an option name differs on your phone, look for “Linked devices” or “Link to existing account”.

## Keep it secure

- Only link devices you control.

- Never scan a QR code or enter a linking code that someone else sends you.
- Turn on two-step verification.
