WhatsApp on your computer is great for work: a full keyboard, easy file sharing, and no squinting at a small screen. Your phone stays the main device; the computer is a linked device.

## Option 1: WhatsApp Web (no install)

1. On your computer, open **web.whatsapp.com** in a browser. A QR code appears.
2. On your phone, open WhatsApp. Android: three dots → **Linked devices**. iPhone: Settings → **Linked devices**.
3. Tap **Link a device** and unlock your phone if asked.
4. Point your phone at the QR code on the computer screen.

## Option 2: the WhatsApp desktop app

Download WhatsApp for Windows from the Microsoft Store, or for Mac from the App Store or whatsapp.com, then link it the same way. The app gives you notifications even when the browser is closed.

## Link with a code instead of a QR code

If your phone’s camera will not scan the code, choose the option to link with your phone number on the computer. WhatsApp shows a one-time code to enter on your phone. Never share that code with anyone.

## Rules to know

- You can link **up to four devices** at a time.
- Linked devices work even when your phone is off or offline.
- WhatsApp logs out linked devices if you do not use WhatsApp on your phone for **over 14 days**.

## Log out safely

- **On the computer:** click Menu (three dots or the arrow) above your chat list → **Log out**.
- **From your phone:** Linked devices → tap the device → **Log out**. Useful if you forgot to log out of a cyber café or office computer.

Check your Linked devices list from time to time. Any device you do not recognise can read your chats. See [check who is linked to your WhatsApp](https://chale.tech/check-whatsapp-linked-devices/).

*This guide was checked in October 2026\. Menus and services change, so if something looks different on your phone, check with your provider.*

## Common questions

### Does my phone need to be on for WhatsApp Web to work?

No, linked devices work independently. But WhatsApp logs them out if your main phone is not used for over 14 days.

### Can I link WhatsApp without scanning a QR code?

Yes. WhatsApp lets you link with your phone number and a one-time code instead.

### How many computers can I link?

Up to four devices at a time.

### Is WhatsApp Web safe on a shared computer?

Only if you log out when you finish. Otherwise the next person can read your chats.
