Every busy WhatsApp group sends a steady stream of photos, videos and voice notes. By default, WhatsApp may download them all, using your data bundle and filling your phone’s storage. Two minutes in settings fixes it.

## On Android

1. Open WhatsApp and tap the three dots → **Settings**.
2. Tap **Storage and data**.
3. Under **Media auto-download**, tap **When using mobile data** and untick photos, audio, videos and documents. Tap OK.
4. Do the same for **When roaming**.
5. Optionally, limit **When connected on Wi-Fi** too if your storage is full.

## On iPhone

1. Open WhatsApp → **Settings** → **Storage and Data**.
2. Under **Media Auto-Download**, set Photos, Audio, Videos and Documents to **Wi-Fi** or **Never**.

WhatsApp’s own advice for limited data plans: restrict auto-download to Wi-Fi. It also warns that auto-download while roaming can lead to much higher charges.

## Keep WhatsApp media out of your gallery

- **Android:** Settings → Chats → turn off **Media visibility**. You can also change it for one chat or group in its info screen.
- **iPhone:** Settings → Chats → turn off **Save to Photos**.

## Free up space WhatsApp already used

Go to Settings → Storage and data → **Manage storage**. WhatsApp shows the largest files and the chats using the most space, so you can delete in bulk, starting with forwarded videos.

## Other WhatsApp data savers

- Turn on **Use less data for calls** in Storage and data.
- Mute or leave groups that flood you with videos.
- Back up chats on Wi-Fi only, and leave videos out of the backup if data is tight.
