When your Android phone runs out of storage, it slows down, apps crash, WhatsApp stops downloading and the camera refuses to save. Here is how to clear space properly, without losing what matters.

## Step 1: See what is using space

Open **Settings → Storage**. You will see a breakdown by category (apps, images, videos, audio, documents, system). Start with the biggest.

## Step 2: Use the built-in “Free up space”

Google’s steps: open **Settings → Storage → Free up space**, then pick unused files by category to delete. On many phones you can also turn on smart storage, which removes photos and videos that are already backed up.

## Step 3: Clear junk with Files by Google

Install **Files by Google** from the Play Store (some phones have it already). Its Clean tab finds junk files, duplicate files, large files and old screenshots, and lets you delete them in a few taps.

## Step 4: Archive or uninstall apps

- **Archive** apps you rarely use: Google says your device can archive apps to free space while keeping their data and icon.
- **Uninstall** apps you never use.
- **Clear cache** of big apps (Settings → Apps → \[app\] → Storage & cache → Clear cache). See [how to clear app cache on Android](https://chale.tech/clear-app-cache-android/).

## Step 5: Tame WhatsApp

WhatsApp media is often the biggest hidden user of space in Ghana. In WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data → **Manage storage**, delete large files and forwarded videos. Then stop it filling up again: [stop WhatsApp auto-downloading media](https://chale.tech/stop-whatsapp-auto-downloading-media/).

## Step 6: Move photos and videos

- **Back up to Google Photos**, then use “Free up space” in Google Photos to remove the copies that are safely backed up.
- **Copy to a computer** with a USB cable.
- **Use a memory card** if your phone has a slot, and set the camera to save there.

Before deleting photos from your phone, open Google Photos (or your backup) and check they are really there.

## Step 7: Downloads and old files

Open the Files app and check **Downloads**: old PDFs, APKs, voice notes and videos pile up there.

## Keep it under control

- Keep at least 10 to 15% of storage free.
- Clear WhatsApp media monthly.
- Turn off auto-download for WhatsApp videos.

## Common questions

### What is using all my storage?

Usually photos and videos, WhatsApp media, and large apps. Settings → Storage shows the breakdown.

### Is it safe to clear an app’s cache?

Yes. Clearing cache deletes temporary files only. Clearing storage (or data) is different: it deletes the app’s data.

### Will archiving an app delete my data?

No. Google says archiving removes the app but keeps its data and icon, so you can restore it later.

### Can I use a memory card?

If your phone has a microSD slot, move photos, videos and music there. Set the camera to save to the card.
