If your MTN data is active but nothing loads, the fix is often your phone’s internet settings. MTN’s settings are short: the APN is just **internet**.

## MTN internet settings at a glance

| Setting | Value |
| --------------- | ---------------- |
| Name | MTN |
| APN | **internet** |
| Everything else | Leave as default |

## Option 1: let MTN send the settings

Dial **\*156#** and select option **2** to receive and install settings automatically. MTN notes this is not available on all devices.

## Option 2: set it yourself on Android

These are MTN’s own steps:

1. Open **Settings**.
2. Tap **Connections** or **Mobile networks**.
3. Tap **Access Point Names**.
4. Tap the menu button and choose **New APN**.
5. Tap **Name** and type **MTN**, then OK.
6. Tap **APN** and type **internet**, then OK.
7. Tap the menu and choose **Save**, then select the new APN.

If you cannot find Access Point Names, search Settings for “APN”. More detail in [how to configure internet settings on Android](https://chale.tech/android-internet-settings-apn/).

## Option 3: iPhone

iPhones usually set MTN’s APN automatically. If not, MTN says to go to **Settings → Mobile Data → Mobile Data Network**, tap APN and type **internet**.

## Basic phones (WAP settings)

| Setting | Value |
| ---------------- | ---------- |
| Account name | MTN |
| APN | wap |
| Proxy IP address | 172.17.3.5 |
| Port | 8080 |

## Turn on 4G

Correct settings on a phone stuck on 2G will still be slow. MTN’s steps for 4G:

- **Android:** Settings → Connections (or More) → Mobile networks → Network mode, and choose “LTE/WCDMA/GSM auto” or “4G/3G/2G auto”.
- **iPhone:** Settings → Mobile Data → Mobile Data Options → turn on 4G/LTE.

MTN says its 4G needs a phone that supports the 800MHz band (band 20). To check, dial **\*156#** and select option 2.

## Still no internet?

Check you have a bundle (MTN: \*124# or the MyMTN app) and work through [our fixes for mobile data not working](https://chale.tech/mobile-data-not-working-android/). If it is slow rather than dead, see [why is my MTN internet slow](https://chale.tech/why-is-my-mtn-internet-slow/).

*This guide was checked in October 2026\. Menus and services change, so if something looks different on your phone, check with your provider.*
