Video editing is one of the toughest jobs for a laptop. A machine that is fine for Word and Zoom can stutter and crash with a 20-minute 1080p timeline. Here is what to look for, by the kind of editing you do.

*We do not list cedi prices in this guide: laptop prices in Ghana change with the exchange rate and between sellers every few weeks. Use the specs here to judge any offer.*

## Specs by editing level

| Level | Processor | RAM | Graphics | Storage |
| ----------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------- | ------ | ------------------------- | ---------------------------- |
| Social clips, 1080p, simple edits | Core i5/Ryzen 5 (recent) | 8–16GB | Integrated okay | 512GB SSD |
| YouTube, events, 1080p with effects | Core i7/Ryzen 7 | 16GB | Dedicated GPU recommended | 512GB–1TB SSD |
| 4K, colour grading, long projects | Core i7/i9, Ryzen 7/9, or Apple M-series Pro | 32GB | Strong dedicated GPU | 1TB+ SSD plus external drive |

## What each spec does

- **Processor:** handles playback and export. More recent and higher-tier means faster exports.
- **RAM:** keeps long timelines smooth. Too little causes stutter and crashes.
- **Graphics (GPU):** speeds up effects, colour and exports in editors like DaVinci Resolve.
- **SSD:** fast storage for smooth scrubbing through footage. Avoid editing from slow hard disks.
- **Screen:** a Full HD (or better) screen with good colour coverage shows your edits accurately.

## Laptops vs heat and power in Ghana

- Powerful laptops get hot; edit on a hard surface with good airflow, or use a cooling pad.
- Exports need power: plug in, and protect against surges after outages.
- Gaming laptops often have the best GPUs for the money, but are heavier and use more power.

## Choose your software first

Your editor affects what you need. DaVinci Resolve leans heavily on the GPU; Clipchamp and CapCut are lighter. See [free video editing software for Windows](https://chale.tech/free-video-editing-software-windows/).

## Common questions

### How much RAM do I need for video editing?

16GB is the practical minimum for smooth 1080p editing; 32GB helps with 4K and long projects.

### Do I need a dedicated graphics card?

It helps a lot, especially with DaVinci Resolve and effects. Apple M-series chips also handle video very well.

### Can I edit on a laptop with 8GB RAM?

Light 1080p edits, yes, with patience and simple editors. Expect slowdowns with effects and long timelines.

### Is a MacBook good for video editing?

Yes, Apple M-series MacBooks are strong video editing machines. Check that your preferred editor runs on macOS.
