You may see “5G” on phone boxes in Accra shops, but can you actually use it in Ghana yet? Here is the honest answer.

## Short answer

**Not yet for most people.** As of early October 2026, news reports say no mobile network has a commercial 5G service available to consumers. That should change soon.

## What exists so far

- **Next-Gen InfraCo (NGIC)**, a shared wholesale network, began commercial operations in March 2026, with service in parts of Accra, Kumasi, Tamale and other key areas. Operators and internet providers can connect to it. See [Next-Gen InfraCo explained](https://chale.tech/next-gen-infraco-5g-explained/).
- In July 2026 the NCA removed the wholesale 5G exclusivity framework, so networks can now build their own 5G.

## What the networks are doing

| Network | Status (early October 2026) |
| ------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| MTN | Secured US$202 million of spectrum: two 20MHz blocks at 700MHz and 150MHz at 3GHz (15-year licences). No launch date announced. |
| Telecel | Won three lots in the 2.3GHz band and a 5G licence. CEO says it aims to launch by December 2026. |
| AT | No 5G launch announced in the reports we reviewed. |

## The government’s target

The government aims for **70% 5G population coverage by March 2027**, Ghana’s 70th independence anniversary.

## What it means for you

- You will need a **5G phone**. See [5G phones in Ghana](https://chale.tech/5g-phones-in-ghana/).
- 4G is still what most people use, and it is good enough for most tasks.
- Early 5G will cover city centres first.
