iOS updates fix bugs, improve battery life and close security holes that scammers can exploit. Updating takes a few minutes of your attention and some patience while it installs.

## Before you update

- **Back up** your iPhone to iCloud or a computer. Apple recommends this first.
- **Connect to power** and to **Wi-Fi**.
- **Free up space** if storage is low. See [how to free up iPhone storage](https://chale.tech/free-up-iphone-storage/).

## How to update

1. Open **Settings**.
2. Tap **General**, then **Software Update**.
3. You will see your current iOS version and whether an update is available.
4. Tap the option to download and install, and follow the prompts. Enter your passcode if asked.

The iPhone restarts during installation. Do not unplug it or force it off.

## Turn on automatic updates

Apple’s path: **Settings → General → Software Update → Automatic Updates**.

- **Automatically Install** installs updates overnight while the phone is charging and on Wi-Fi. Apple notifies you first.
- **Automatically Download** just downloads updates so you can install them when you choose.
- You can also choose to install only security responses and system files automatically.

## Not enough storage?

Apple says that if an update needs more space, your iPhone may offer to remove apps temporarily and reinstall them automatically after the update. If you decline, free up space yourself first.

## Save data while updating

- Update on Wi-Fi where possible.
- If you must use mobile data, schedule it for a cheap night bundle. See [MTN Midnight Bundle](https://chale.tech/mtn-night-bundle/) or [Telecel night bundle](https://chale.tech/telecel-night-bundle/).
- Turn on Automatically Download so the download happens overnight.

## After the update

Apple says it is normal for your iPhone to feel warm and use more battery for a day or so after a major update, while it finishes background tasks.

## Common questions

### How much data does an iOS update use?

It varies. Minor updates are smaller; major versions can be several gigabytes. Use Wi-Fi or a night bundle.

### Can I update my iPhone without Wi-Fi?

Recent iPhones can download some updates over mobile data, but large updates may need Wi-Fi. A hotspot from another phone also works.

### Why is my iPhone warm after updating?

Apple says it is normal for an iPhone to feel warm during and shortly after a software update.

### My iPhone does not show the newest iOS. Why?

Older models eventually stop getting new major versions, though they may still receive security updates.
