Buying a new phone should be exciting, not the moment you lose years of family photos, voice notes and business chats. WhatsApp stores your messages on your phone, not on its servers, so moving them is your job. Done properly, it takes about 15 to 30 minutes. Done in a hurry, it can wipe everything.

Here are the official methods, depending on which phones you are moving between.

## Before you start: three checks

1. **Keep your SIM.** You will verify WhatsApp on the new phone with the same number, so you need to receive an SMS or call on it.
2. **Charge both phones and use Wi-Fi.** A backup with years of photos and videos can be several gigabytes. Do not burn your data bundle on it.
3. **Do not delete WhatsApp from the old phone** until you have confirmed everything arrived on the new one.

## Android to Android

### Option A: Transfer directly between the two phones

Newer versions of WhatsApp can move your chats straight from one phone to another over a local connection. On the old phone, open WhatsApp and go to **Settings → Chats → Transfer chats** (the name may vary slightly by version). Follow the steps; the new phone will show or scan a QR code to connect the two. Keep both phones close together and unlocked until it finishes.

### Option B: Google Drive backup and restore

1. On the old phone, open WhatsApp → **Settings → Chats → Chat backup**.
2. Choose the Google account to back up to, decide whether to include videos, and tap **Back up**. Wait for it to finish.
3. On the new phone, sign in to the same Google account, install WhatsApp and verify your number.
4. When WhatsApp finds the backup, tap **Restore**.

## iPhone to iPhone

The simplest route is an iCloud backup. On the old iPhone, open WhatsApp → **Settings → Chats → Chat backup** and tap **Back up now**. On the new iPhone, sign in with the same Apple ID, install WhatsApp, verify your number and choose **Restore chat history**.

## Android to iPhone

WhatsApp supports moving your full chat history from Android to iPhone using Apple’s **Move to iOS** app. According to WhatsApp, this requires Android 12 or later on the old phone. The key catch: it works during the **setup** of the new iPhone. If you have already set up the iPhone, you may need to reset it to factory settings to use Move to iOS.

1. Install **Move to iOS** on your Android phone.
2. While setting up your iPhone, choose to move data from Android and follow the prompts.
3. When asked what to move, select **WhatsApp**.
4. Once the iPhone is set up, install WhatsApp from the App Store, sign in with the same number and accept the transfer.

WhatsApp says call history and your display name do not move across in this method. Your messages, photos and media do.

## iPhone to Android

WhatsApp also supports moving chats from iPhone to Android. On many newer Android phones, the option appears during setup when you choose to copy data from an iPhone, and you complete it by scanning a QR code with the iPhone. Steps differ between phone brands, so follow the instructions your new Android phone shows during setup, and check WhatsApp’s Help Center if the option does not appear.

## Common mistakes that lose chats

- **Changing your number at the same time.** Use WhatsApp’s *Change number* feature on the old phone first, then move phones.
- **Restoring with a different Google account or Apple ID** from the one you backed up to.
- **Skipping the restore screen.** If you tap Skip, WhatsApp starts fresh. You may have to reinstall to get the option back.
- **Wiping the old phone too early.** Check your important chats on the new phone first.
- **Running out of storage.** Free up space on the new phone before restoring a large backup.

## After the move

- Turn on **two-step verification** again if WhatsApp asks (see our guide).
- Set up automatic backups so you are never caught out again: **Settings → Chats → Chat backup → Back up automatically**.
- Once you are sure everything is there, factory reset the old phone before selling or giving it away.

## Common questions

### Will my WhatsApp groups move to the new phone?

Yes. Your group memberships are tied to your number, so you stay in your groups. Restoring a backup or transfer brings back the group chat history too.

### How long does the transfer take?

It depends on how much media you have. A small chat history can move in minutes; years of photos and videos can take much longer. Keep both phones charged and on Wi-Fi.

### Can I use WhatsApp on two phones at once?

WhatsApp supports linked devices, letting you use your account on other devices alongside your main phone. That is different from moving your account, which this guide covers.

### I skipped the restore step by mistake. Can I fix it?

Usually yes. Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp, verify your number again, and the restore option should reappear as long as your backup still exists.
