Checking your MTN data balance should take ten seconds. It often takes longer because there are different codes for different MTN products, and many websites mix them up. This guide sorts them out, using MTN’s own help centre.

## On your phone: the MyMTN app

The quickest way if you have a smartphone and some data left:

1. Open the **MyMTN** app (free on Google Play and the App Store).
2. Tap **Data** on the home screen.
3. Your remaining data balance is shown, along with your bundles.

## On your phone: \*138# (works on any phone)

No app, no data, no smartphone? Use the USSD menu:

1. Dial **\*138#**.
2. Select **1** to proceed to buy bundle.
3. Select **99** for More.
4. Select **7** for More.
5. Select **3** for Check Bundle Balance.

MTN sends your available data balance by SMS. For a step-by-step version with tips for when the code fails, see [how to check MTN data balance without an app](https://chale.tech/check-mtn-data-balance-without-app/).

MTN updates the \*138# menu from time to time. If an option number on your phone is different from the one here, follow the names instead: they change less often than the numbers.

## On an MTN MiFi or router

MiFi devices and home routers use a different code. MTN lists two ways:

- **USSD:** dial **\*124#** and your balance details are displayed.
- **MyMTN app:** connect your phone to the MiFi’s Wi-Fi, open the MyMTN app, and the balance is displayed.

## On a postpaid line

Postpaid customers also use **\*124#**. MTN says “Available Limit” shows your remaining voice balance and “Data A/C” shows your current data balance in MB.

**Shortcut:** MTN’s help centre also lists **\*124#** for checking your data balance, on phones as well as MiFi and postpaid lines. If \*124# does not show your data on your line, use the \*138# route above, which MTN documents step by step.

## On TurboNet or MTN Fibre

For home broadband, dial **\*5057#** from the MTN number linked to your broadband account, choose **3** to check balance, then choose the data option. You can also open the MyMTN app and go to the Broadband section.

## Quick reference

| Line or device | How to check data balance |
| ------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Prepaid phone line | MyMTN app → Data, or \*138# → 1 → 99 → 7 → 3 |
| MiFi or router | \*124#, or the MyMTN app while connected to the MiFi |
| Postpaid line | \*124# (look for “Data A/C”) |
| TurboNet or Fibre | \*5057# from the linked number → 3, or MyMTN app → Broadband |

## Balance dropping faster than you expected?

If your data seems to vanish, MTN’s own answer is that it bills accurately, and that background apps and updates are usually what is using your data. That is often true, but you don’t have to take anyone’s word for it:

1. **Check your phone’s own counter.** Android: Settings → Network & internet (or Connections) → Data usage. iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data. This shows which apps used what.
2. **Request your usage history from MTN.** Dial **\*1333#**, choose to access services, follow the prompts to “Itemized Requests” and request your data usage. MTN emails the record at no charge.
3. **Compare the two.** If the numbers are far apart, take both to MTN customer care.

Most of the time the culprit turns out to be auto-playing videos, WhatsApp media downloads or app updates. Our guide to [making your mobile data last longer](https://chale.tech/how-to-make-your-mobile-data-last-longer/) shows how to stop them.

## Set a warning so you are never surprised

Both Android and iPhone can warn you before you use too much. On Android, go to Settings → Data usage → Data warning & limit, and set a warning a bit below your bundle size. On iPhone, check Settings → Mobile Data regularly and reset the statistics at the start of each bundle so the count is easy to read.

## Common questions

### What is the MTN data balance code?

MTN’s help centre lists two: the quick code \*124#, and the \*138# menu (1, 99, 7, 3), which sends your balance by SMS. MiFi, router and postpaid lines use \*124#.

### Can I check my MTN data balance in the MyMTN app without data?

The app needs an internet connection. If your data has run out, use \*138#, which works without data, or connect to Wi-Fi.

### How do I check someone else’s MTN data balance?

You can only check a line’s balance from that line. Ask the person to dial \*138# on their phone, or check it on their MiFi with \*124#.

### Why is my MTN data finishing so fast?

Usually background apps, video autoplay, WhatsApp media downloads and app updates. Check your phone’s data usage screen to find the culprits, and request your usage history with \*1333# if the numbers look wrong.
