- Description: “iPhone Storage Full” again? Apple’s own fixes: check what is using space, offload unused apps, clear old Messages attachments, and move photos to iCloud or a computer the safe way.

When your iPhone says storage is almost full, it stops taking photos, refuses updates and slows down. The fix is to find out what is really using the space, then clear it in the right order.

## Step 1: See what is using space

Apple’s path: **Settings → General → iPhone Storage**. Available storage is shown at the top, with a list of apps sorted by size and personalised recommendations. Start with whatever is biggest.

## Step 2: Use Apple’s recommendations

- **Offload Unused Apps:** removes apps you rarely use but keeps their data. Turn it on in Settings → Apps → App Store → Offload Unused Apps, or accept the recommendation in iPhone Storage.
- **Review large attachments** in Messages and delete the ones you do not need.
- **Delete old conversations** you will never read again.

## Step 3: Deal with photos and videos

Photos and videos are usually the biggest item. Apple’s suggestion is to back them up to iCloud and then remove them from the device. Options:

- **iCloud Photos with Optimise iPhone Storage** keeps full-size originals in iCloud and smaller versions on the phone (you may need to buy more iCloud storage).
- **Copy to a computer** with a cable, then delete from the phone.
- **Empty Recently Deleted.** Deleted photos stay there for 30 days and still use space. Photos → Utilities → Recently Deleted → Delete All.

If iCloud Photos is on, deleting a photo on your iPhone deletes it from iCloud and your other devices too. Make an offline copy of anything precious first.

## Step 4: Clear WhatsApp and other heavy apps

- **WhatsApp:** Settings → Storage and Data → Manage Storage, then delete large files and forwarded videos. Stop it filling up again: [stop WhatsApp auto-downloading media](https://chale.tech/stop-whatsapp-auto-downloading-media/).
- **Streaming and music apps:** delete downloaded episodes and songs you have finished.
- **Files app:** delete old downloads and documents you no longer need.

## Step 5: Restart

Restarting clears some temporary files and helps the storage figure update.

## Keep it from filling up again

- Leave Offload Unused Apps on.
- Clear Recently Deleted regularly.
- Record 4K or high-frame-rate video only when you need it (Settings → Camera → Record Video).

Updating iOS needs free space too. See [how to update iOS on your iPhone](https://chale.tech/how-to-update-ios/).

## Common questions

### What takes up the most space on an iPhone?

Usually photos and videos, then Messages and WhatsApp media, then large apps. Settings → General → iPhone Storage shows the exact breakdown.

### What does Offload Unused Apps do?

It removes apps you rarely use but keeps their documents and data, so you can reinstall them later and carry on where you left off.

### Is “System Data” safe to delete?

You cannot delete it directly. It is made of caches and temporary files that iOS manages. Restarting and clearing large app caches can reduce it.

### Will deleting photos from my iPhone delete them from iCloud?

If iCloud Photos is on, yes: deleting on one device deletes everywhere. Download a copy to a computer first if you want to keep them.
