Paying for Microsoft Office is not the only option. For school, work and business, free tools handle documents, spreadsheets and presentations very well. And they are far safer than cracked Office, which often comes with malware.

## The main options

| Phone apps (Word, Excel, Google Docs) | Partly | Quick edits on the go |

## Microsoft 365 for the web

Microsoft’s free web versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint run in your browser with a free Microsoft account, and save to OneDrive. If your school or employer expects Word files, this is the closest match. You need internet.

## Google Docs, Sheets and Slides

Free with a Google account. Brilliant for group work: several people can edit at once and comment. You can download files as Word, Excel or PowerPoint. Turn on offline access in Google Drive settings for working without data.

## LibreOffice

A free, full office suite you install on Windows, Mac or Linux: Writer (documents), Calc (spreadsheets), Impress (presentations) and more. It works completely offline and opens Office files. Ideal when internet is unreliable or expensive.

## Which should you choose?

- **Unreliable internet:** LibreOffice.
- **Group projects:** Google Docs.
- **Must look exactly like Word:** Microsoft 365 for the web.
- **Students:** check whether your school provides free Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace accounts.

Avoid cracked or “activated” copies of Office. They are illegal and a common source of viruses and ransomware.
