An email address is essential for job applications, school portals, banking apps, and setting up an Android phone. Gmail is free and quick to set up.

## On an Android phone

1. Open **Settings → Google** (or Settings → Passwords & accounts → Add account → Google).
2. Tap **Create account** and choose **For my personal use**.
3. Enter your name, date of birth and gender.
4. Choose a Gmail address or create your own.
5. Create a strong password.
6. Add a recovery phone number and email when asked.
7. Agree to the terms.

## On a computer or iPhone

Go to the Google Account sign-in page (accounts.google.com), click **Create account**, choose personal use, and follow the same steps. Google advises signing out of any existing account first.

## Choosing a good address

- Use your real name for school and job applications: firstname.lastname@gmail.com, or add a middle initial or number.
- Avoid nicknames that will look unprofessional on a CV.
- Google will not allow names already taken or very similar to existing ones.

## Secure it from day one

- Add a **recovery phone** and **recovery email**: Google says updated recovery info makes it much more likely you can get your account back.
- Turn on **2-Step Verification**. See [how to secure your Google account](https://chale.tech/secure-your-google-account/).
- Never share your password or verification codes.

## Common questions

### Is Gmail free?

Yes. A Google Account with Gmail is free, with free storage shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos.

### Why does Gmail say my username is taken?

Google says you cannot use a username that is already taken, very similar to an existing one, previously used and deleted, or reserved.

### Do I need a phone number?

Google may ask for one to verify you. Adding one as a recovery phone helps you get back in if you forget your password.

### How old do I need to be?

Google has minimum age rules for managing your own account; younger children can have accounts managed by a parent through Family Link.
