Web hosting is the computer that stores your website and shows it to visitors. Cheap hosting can mean a slow, unreliable site; expensive hosting is often more than a small business needs. Here is how to choose sensibly.

## Types of hosting

| Type | Good for | Notes |
| ---------------------------------- | ---------------------------- | ---------------------------------------- |
| Website builder (hosting included) | Most small businesses | Easiest; you do not manage servers |
| Shared hosting | Small WordPress sites, blogs | Cheap; shared resources |
| Managed WordPress hosting | Business sites on WordPress | Host handles updates, speed and security |
| VPS or cloud server | Busy sites, custom apps | Needs technical skills or a developer |

## What to check before you pay

1. **Speed for Ghanaian visitors:** ask for a test site or check reviews from Ghanaian users.
2. **Uptime:** how often is it down? Look for a clear uptime commitment.
3. **Backups:** automatic, regular, and easy to restore.
4. **Free SSL (https):** essential for trust and Google.
5. **Support:** how fast, and through which channels? WhatsApp or phone support can matter.
6. **Renewal price:** many hosts offer cheap first years and higher renewals.
7. **Payment options:** MoMo, local cards or international cards.
8. **Email hosting:** do you get business email (you@yourbusiness.com)?

## Local vs international hosts

- **Local hosts:** cedi billing, MoMo payments, local support hours.
- **International hosts:** often more features and data centre choices; billing in dollars by card.

Test both from Ghana before committing to a long contract.

**Keep control.** The hosting account, like your domain, should be in your name with your email. Keep your own backups of the site.

## Common questions

### Should I use a Ghanaian or international host?

Both can work. Local hosts may offer cedi billing and local support; international hosts often have more features. Test speed from Ghana and compare support.

### What is shared hosting?

Your site shares a server with many others. It is cheap and fine for small sites, but can slow down if neighbours are busy.

### Do I need a VPS?

Only for busier sites or custom setups, and you need some technical skill or a developer to manage it.

### What about backups?

Make sure your host takes regular backups, and keep your own copies too.
