- Description: No MyMTN app, no smartphone, or no data left to open it? You can still check your MTN data balance with *138#, request your full usage history, and use your phone’s own counter.

The MyMTN app is handy, but you don’t need it to check your data balance. Maybe you use a basic phone, your phone is full and you don’t want another app, or your data is already finished and the app will not load. These methods work anyway.

## Method 1: \*138# (any phone, no data needed)

USSD codes work over the mobile network itself, not the internet, so they work even when your data balance is zero. They also work on basic “yam” phones.

1. Dial **\*138#** and press call.
2. A menu appears. Reply **1** (proceed to buy bundle). The balance check is further down this menu; you are not buying anything yet.
3. Reply **99** for More.
4. Reply **7** for More.
5. Reply **3** for Check Bundle Balance.
6. Wait for an SMS from MTN with your available data balance.

These steps come from MTN’s help centre, checked in October 2026.

MTN updates the \*138# menu from time to time. If an option number on your phone is different from the one here, follow the names instead: they change less often than the numbers.

### If the code doesn’t work

- **“Connection problem or invalid MMI code”:** check you have network signal, then try again. If it keeps failing, switch on airplane mode for ten seconds, switch it off, and retry.
- **The menu times out:** USSD sessions only last a short time. Have the steps ready before you dial, and reply quickly.
- **Dual-SIM phone:** make sure you dial from the MTN SIM. Most phones ask which SIM to use, or use the default calling SIM.
- **Still nothing:** make sure your SIM is properly registered with your Ghana Card. Unregistered SIMs can lose access to services. See [SIM registration and your Ghana Card](https://chale.tech/sim-registration-and-your-ghana-card-explained/).

## Method 2: your phone’s built-in data counter

Your phone keeps its own record of how much mobile data you have used. It cannot tell you your MTN balance, but it shows how fast you are using data and which apps are responsible. It works offline.

- **Android:** Settings → Network & internet (or Connections) → Data usage → Mobile data usage.
- **iPhone:** Settings → Mobile Data. Scroll down for each app’s usage. Tap “Reset Statistics” at the bottom when you buy a new bundle, so the count starts from zero.

Tip: if you know your bundle was 1.39GB and your phone shows you have used 1GB since you bought it, you have roughly 400MB left, without dialling anything.

## Method 3: your full usage history by email (\*1333#)

If you want more than a balance, such as a record of when your data was used, MTN can email it to you at no charge:

1. Dial **\*1333#**.
2. Select **1** to access services.
3. Enter your PIN when asked.
4. Select **6** for Itemized Requests, then the data usage option, and follow the prompts.

This is the best evidence to have if you ever need to dispute your data use with MTN.

## Method 4: the confirmation SMS

Every time you buy a bundle, MTN sends an SMS confirming what you bought. Keep it. Together with your phone’s data counter (Method 2), it tells you roughly how much is left.

## What about \*124#?

\*124# is a shorter code that MTN’s help centre also lists for checking your data balance, and it is the code MTN gives for MiFi devices, routers and postpaid lines. Try it first; if it does not show your data bundle on your line, use the \*138# steps above. For MiFi, postpaid, TurboNet and Fibre, see our main guide to [checking your MTN data balance](https://chale.tech/how-to-check-mtn-data-balance/).

Be wary of websites or WhatsApp messages offering a “secret code” to check or add data. Get codes only from MTN’s website, help centre or app. Some fake codes are set up to move your airtime or subscribe you to paid services.

## Running out too fast?

If you find yourself checking your balance every few hours because it keeps dropping, the problem is usually your phone’s settings, not the network. Start with our guide to [making your mobile data last longer](https://chale.tech/how-to-make-your-mobile-data-last-longer/), and compare [what each MTN bundle gives you](https://chale.tech/mtn-data-bundle-prices-ghana/).

*This guide was checked in October 2026\. Menus and services change, so if something looks different on your phone, check with your provider.*

## Common questions

### Does \*138# work on a basic phone?

Yes. USSD codes work on any mobile phone, including basic phones, because they use the mobile network rather than the internet.

### Does checking my balance cost money?

Checking your balance is part of MTN’s \*138# menu. If you are ever unsure whether a code costs money, ask MTN customer care before dialling it.

### Is \*124# the MTN data balance code?

Yes, MTN’s help centre lists \*124# for checking your data balance, and it is the code for MiFi, router and postpaid lines. If it does not show your bundle, use the \*138# menu instead.

### Why does my phone say “invalid MMI code”?

Usually a weak signal or a typing mistake. Check the code, make sure you are dialling from the MTN SIM, toggle airplane mode and try again.
