- Description: Charging slowly, on and off, or not at all? Most charging problems come down to the cable, the adapter, a dirty port, heat or software. Work through these fixes before paying for a repair.

A phone that will not charge is stressful, especially when light is unreliable. Before you pay for a new charging port or battery, check the simple causes first. Most charging problems are fixed for free.

## 1\. Try another cable and adapter

Cables fail more often than phones. Try a different cable and plug, ideally your phone’s original charger or a good-quality one. Google’s troubleshooting starts with swapping cables and adapters, and notes that a damaged or unsupported accessory can make charging very slow or stop it entirely.

## 2\. Try another socket

Plug into a different wall socket. Low or unstable voltage, extension boards and some generators and inverters can stop a phone charging properly. Laptop USB ports charge slowly.

## 3\. Clean the charging port

Pocket lint packs into the port over time and stops the cable going all the way in. Turn the phone off, shine a torch into the port, and gently remove fluff with a wooden toothpick or soft brush. Never use a pin, needle or liquid.

## 4\. Let it cool down

Phones slow or pause charging when they are hot, to protect the battery. Google says a hot phone may charge more slowly. Take it out of the case, keep it out of the sun, and avoid heavy use while charging. See [why is your phone overheating](https://chale.tech/why-is-my-phone-overheating/).

## 5\. Check battery settings

- Many phones have an **adaptive** or **protect battery** setting that holds charge at 80% or pauses near full to extend battery life. Check Settings → Battery.
- Google’s Pixel guidance mentions turning off charging optimisation if charging stops short of 100% and you need a full charge.

## 6\. Restart the phone

A software glitch can stop the phone recognising the charger. Restart, then plug in again. If the phone is completely dead, leave it charging for 30 minutes before trying to turn it on.

## 7\. Update the software

Install any system updates (Settings → System → Software update), as charging bugs are sometimes fixed in updates.

## When it is time for a repair

- The cable only works when held at an angle: the port may be worn or damaged.
- The battery is swollen (the back or screen is lifting): stop using and charging it, and get it to a repair shop. A swollen battery is a fire risk.
- Nothing works with several known-good chargers.

Use a reputable repair shop and ask for a genuine or good-quality replacement battery. Cheap batteries often have less capacity than claimed. Our guide to [buying a power bank that is not lying](https://chale.tech/how-to-buy-a-power-bank-that-is-not-lying/) explains how capacity claims work.

## Common questions

### Why does my phone charge slowly?

Usually a weak or damaged charger, a low-quality cable, a dirty port, or heat. Using the phone heavily while charging also slows it down.

### Can a fake charger damage my phone?

Cheap, poor-quality chargers can charge slowly, overheat and in some cases damage the phone or battery. Use the original charger or a reputable brand.

### How do I clean my charging port?

Turn the phone off and gently remove lint with a wooden toothpick or a soft brush. Do not use metal objects or liquids.

### Why does my phone stop charging at 80%?

Many phones have a battery-protection setting that stops at 80% or pauses charging to extend battery life. Check Settings → Battery.
